The New York Stock Exchange (sometimes referred to as "the Big Board") provides a means for buyers and sellers to trade shares of stock in companies registered for public trading. The NYSE is open for trading Monday through Friday from 9:30 am -- 4:00 pm ET, with the exception of holidays declared by the Exchange in advance. The NYSE trades in a continuous auction format, where traders can execute stock transactions on behalf of investors. They will gather around the appropriate post where a specialist broker, who is employed by an NYSE member firm (that is, he/she is not an employee of the New York Stock Exchange), acts as an auctioneer in an open outcry auction market environment to bring buyers and sellers together and to manage the actual auction. They do on occasion (approximately 10% of the time) facilitate the trades by committing their own capital and as a matter of course disseminate information to the crowd that helps to bring buyers and sellers together. The auction process moved toward automation in 1995 through the use of wireless hand held computers (HHC). The system enabled traders to receive and execute orders electronically via wireless transmission. On September 25, 1995, NYSE member Michael Einersen, who designed and developed this system, executed 1000 shares of IBM through this HHC ending a 203 year process of paper transactions and ushering in an era of automated trading. As of January 24, 2007, all NYSE stocks can be traded via its electronic hybrid market (except for a small group of very high-priced stocks). Customers can now send orders for immediate electronic execution, or route orders to the floor for trade in the auction market. In the first three months of 2007, in excess of 82% of all order volume was delivered to the floor electronically.[23] NYSE works with US regulators like the SEC and CFTC to coordinate risk management measures in the electronic trading environment through the implementation of mechanisms like circuit breakers and liquidity replenishment points.[24] Until 2005, the right to directly trade shares on the exchange was conferred upon owners of the 1366 "seats". The term comes from the fact that up until the 1870s NYSE members sat in chairs to trade. In 1868, the number of seats was fixed at 533, and this number was increased several times over the years. In 1953, the number of seats was set at 1,366. These seats were a sought-after commodity as they conferred the ability to directly trade stock on the NYSE, and seat holders were commonly referred to as members of the NYSE. The Barnes family is the only known lineage to have five generations of NYSE members: Winthrop H. Barnes (admitted 1894), Richard W.P. Barnes (admitted 1926), Richard S. Barnes (admitted 1951), Robert H. Barnes (admitted 1972), Derek J. Barnes (admitted 2003). Seat prices varied widely over the years, generally falling during recessions and rising during economic expansions. The most expensive inflation-adjusted seat was sold in 1929 for $625,000, which, today, would be over six million dollars. In recent times, seats have sold for as high as $4 million in the late 1990s and as low as $1 million in 2001. In 2005, seat prices shot up to $3.25 million as the exchange entered into an agreement to merge with Archipelago and become a for-profit, publicly traded company. Seat owners received $500,000 in cash per seat and 77,000 shares of the newly formed corporation. The NYSE now sells one-year licenses to trade directly on the exchange. Licences for floor trading are available for $40,000 and a licence for bond trading is available for as little as $1,000 as of 2010.[25] Neither are resell-able, but may be transferable in during the change of ownership of a cooperation holding a trading licence. On February 15, 2011 NYSE and Deutsche Börse announced their merger to form a new company, as yet unnamed, wherein Deutsche Börse shareholders will have 60% ownership of the new entity, and NYSE Euronext shareholders will have 40%. On February 1, 2012, the European Commission blocked the merger of NYSE with Deutsche Börse, after commissioner Joaquin Almunia stated that the merger "would have led to a near-monopoly in European financial derivatives worldwide".[38] Instead, Deutsche Börse and NYSE will have to sell either their Eurex derivatives or LIFFE shares in order to not create a monopoly. On February 2, 2012, NYSE Euronext and Deutsche Börse agreed to scrap the merger.[39] In April 2011, IntercontinentalExchange (ICE), an American futures exchange, and NASDAQ OMX Group had together made an unsolicited proposal to buy NYSE Euronext for approximately US$11 billion, a deal in which NASDAQ would have taken control of the stock exchanges.[40] NYSE Euronext rejected this offer two times, but it was finally terminated after the United States Department of Justice indicated their intention to block the deal due to antitrust concerns. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Stock_Exchange

Bitcoin has had a crazy past week relative to the slow and steady downtrend we've been in. Volume finally started to pick up and notably price pumped $1k in 30 mins before we saw the market start to stall again. Steemit Post: https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@cryptovestor/why-i-think-we-ve-reached-a-bitcoin-bottom Last week I started to become tempted to buy Bitcoin at around $6800. Bitcoin had been trading around that level for 2 weeks, so mentally I suspect I started to feel like we were at a bottom and I didn't want to miss out on the next pump. The fact that I felt FOMO while we were trading sideways (especially given my general pessimism) LIKELY means that many other market participants feel the same way. The only reason I didn't buy is because of trading rules I've set where I can't increase my position size in Bitcoin until it goes down to $5k. Furthermore, Bitcoin dominance is starting to fall which means money is shifting into altcoins again. This is a risk-off trade which shows confidence in the market. My confidence in my 50% BTC dominance prediction is finally starting to wane, which given the level of conviction I had for months despite all the criticism I received for it, is a sign that perhaps the market is ready for more stupid behavior (AKA another nice bull run). In terms of altcoin trades I'm looking at, I discuss the following: 1) Litecoin at 0.015 BTC 2) Monero below 0.025 BTC 3) Nano at around 70 - 75k Satoshi (yes, the crypto I called a pump & dump - it's finally come full circle) What are your thoughts on the market? As usual, feel free to share them with me and the community in the comment section below. Thanks for watching / reading! ================ If you like my content, you can support me through using ANY of the affiliate links below (I receive small compensation). The beauty of affiliate links is that I can pick and choose what I like rather than have companies approach me - everything I linked below (with the exception of Trezor since I like Ledger), I use myself frequently. ================ My Recommended Hardware Wallets: If you want to store your cryptocurrencies safely, the best way is through a hardware wallet. Seriously - look it up and you'll find plenty of information supporting this claim. There are alternatives such as paper wallets, but these are convenient and my choice for cold storage (offline): Ledger Nano S: http://amzn.to/2hZPj0q Trezor: http://amzn.to/2AxD9TN Ledger Blue (expensive): http://amzn.to/2hk7xst I personally prefer the Ledger Nano S, but the Trezor is such a close second that it really doesn't matter which one you go with. Ledger Blue is premium and convenient, but not necessary. ================ My Favorite Book for Investing in Crypto: Cryptoassets: http://amzn.to/2zKDdCF This book is, bar none, my favorite book for investing in cryptocurrencies. It doesn't bog you down with technical jargon, but instead focuses on all the elements you should understand before you invest. It's a comprehensive book for both beginners and experts. Beginners will find information about major cryptocurrencies (not just Bitcoin) as well as details on historical market events (that you can draw on for future) and events to watch for moving into the future. Experts will find the chapters on valuation particularly useful. For those of you involved in traditional investing, this book is even more of a godsend as finance info is explored (correlations with other asset classes, ETFs, etc). ================ My Recommended Exchanges: Coinbase / GDAX / Bittrex https://www.coinbase.com/join/5a08b12e305a1401d79d10e0 If you sign up to Coinbase using link above, you and I will both receive $10 each after you buy your first $100 of Bitcoin using Coinbase. Coinbase is much less intimidating for beginners. Once ready, move up to GDAX for cheaper or zero fees. For altcoins, I recommend Bittrex. ================ Legal Stuff: I am a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for me to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites. An informational video updated in June 2016 for investors of World Bank (IBRD) bonds. Previous version of video from March 2012 at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLxSH88gFDQ. The World Bank raises money in international capital markets by issuing bonds that bring solid returns to investors. We invest in member countries so their economies can grow in a sustainable way for people to help themselves and their environment. Proceeds from World Bank bonds help support loans for environment and climate change projects, and also help support loans for other projects which strengthen health and education systems, support private business development, promote reforms to create stable macroeconomic environments, and foster social development and inclusion. More on the World Bank's role in the capital markets can be found at www.worldbank.org/debtsecurities.

An investor in the hospitality industry in Kilifi County has raised issue with the hostile environment of conducting trade in the country, a factor which is making Kenya lose out to neighbouring countries as an investment destination. Miriam Peacoat, the co-owner of Black Marlin Resort at Bofa area in Kilifi town says government authorities have done little to intervene in a case in which property she leased out with her husband was instead fraudulently sold. She has decried the collusion of some people in government with those to whom the property was leased who are hell-bent on frustrating the couple from profiting from their investment.

The Intelligent InvestorChapter 4General Portfolio Policy: The Defensive Investor As crazy as it sounds, one should not have everything in stocks. Perhaps the best counter option are short term bonds now. We discuss Graham’s take and apply a contemporary perspective on it. Graham clearly differentiates between aggressive and defensive investors where an aggressive investor spends a lot of time on research while a defensive one enjoys life. No matter where you are aggressive or defensive this chapter is crucial for this environment as being defensive might be the most aggressive thing one can do. Let’s see what Graham had to say about the stock and bond allocation and whether it still applies to this environment. Opposite view on risk The common view on risk is that low risk equals low returns but Graham, like me, sees things from a different perspective. For him a well-researched bargain is much less risky than a bond because bonds lose a lot if interest rates increase and if there is inflation, thus those are also risky. The basic problem of bond stock allocation Graham’s view for the defensive investor is to have an allocation between bonds and stocks between 25% and 75%. When stocks are cheap one should have 75% in stocks and vice versa. This is against human nature and we have seen that in 2017, after an 8-year bull market, stock market inflows were the highest. However, this human trait of buying high is exactly the reason why one should do the opposite and buy low when others are selling low. Another problem is that the stock bond allocation is personal and here is where the problems start. If you would have been just 25% in stocks for the past 3 years you would have missed out on the 25% run the S&P 500 has had since while your returns would be around zero given the returns on bonds and their recent decline.

Investment banks are notorious for their highly competitive working environment and long working hours for junior employees. Nevertheless, they continue to be seen as one of the prime destinations for talented Business and Finance graduates, given the excitement of working on large deals and the high pay scale that comes with this job. Investment banking operations tend to be more sophisticated than traditional “deposit taking, credit giving” retail banking services. Investment banks work closely with corporate clients, pension funds, financial sponsors and governments to structure and execute some of the largest transactions that we see in the news.
